Notes on the Double Agent

Shortly before the invasion of Italy the body of a British major washed ashore in Spain. He carried secret letters providing the Germans invaluable intelligence on allied plans. Acting on this intelligence, Hitler moved many of the troops defending Italy to the Peloponnese.
The identity of the major was built like that of a movie character with both a personal history and an assignment both of which could be learned from the items he was carrying on him. Once the body was found, British intelligence playacted going into a frenzy to recover the body and the papers he was carrying, for the benefit of its audencie, German intelligence.
MINCEMEAT was the codename of this operation.
